Thinking About Trying Out Sword Fighting?

Frequently Asked Questions

image74

Is this beginner friendly?

Yes, very! We'd be limiting ourselves to an extremely niche group if we required members to have prior sword fighting experience. Having sports or martial arts experience can be helpful, but it's certainly not required. We love beginners because they come to us as a clean slate ready to absorb new skills. We welcome everyone regardless of experience, fitness level, ability, or body type. Sword fighting is to be enjoyed by everyone.

Do you have a beginner day?

Yup! Technically, you can come by  anytime, but if you want a beginner friendly setting we suggest coming in for our Saturday morning classes! Saturday morning classes are exclusively based around fundamentals, but you can attend any class you like!

Do I need to buy any equipment?

Not right away, but most people choose to buy their own masks usually after a month or so. Once you decide that this is a hobby you want to spend time doing, we can help recommend the best and safest gear for you. But you won't need to buy anything until you're ready to do so. We provide everything you need to participate.

Could I get hurt?

Like any sport, physical activity, or martial art there is always a risk of injury. However, we use safety equipment, blunted and flexible weapons, and adhere to a strict code of conduct to minimize the possibility of injury. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we will never make you do anything you're uncomfortable with.

Do you have a Code of Conduct?

We do, and we require members to abide by it. You can read it here. We also have a Safe Sparring Protocol and a Return to Class Protocol for Covid-19.

Are the swords sharp?

The swords that we use for sparring, solo drills, and partnered drills are not sharp. They are either nylon synthetic trainers or blunted steel swords. However, we do offer sword cutting as part of our practice. The swords we use for cutting are sharp and we only use them to cut targets.

What should I bring to my first class?

We suggest you wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement and exercise. A water bottle is also strongly recommended. If you happen to have wrestling or karate shoes, bring those! We don't allow outside shoes on our training floor, but you're welcome to wear wrestling shoes, karate shoes, socks, or go barefoot. We sanitize our mats regularly.
