Shield Knock 2024

We are excited to be hosting Shield Knock in our newly renovated studio at 2909 S Dobson, Suite 1, Mesa, Arizona, 85202.

Shield Knock is an event for learning and experimenting, this is NOT a tournament. Shield Knock is 'system agnostic', meaning it welcomes everyone in the wider sword family to join us. While the hosts are primarily HEMA instructors, we welcome folks from adjacent practices such as buhurt, SCA, HAMA, and more. If it has shields, it is welcome! 

This event offers workshops from a variety of instructors who offer their unique experience to the study of shields. There will also be plenty of time for free sparring (bring your gear!), lectures, and scenarios! Yes, scenarios. 'Scenarios' are based in experimental archaeology where ideas, theories, and concepts get tested in practice. Ever wondered how well you can actually cut around a variety of shields using a sharp sword? How about testing your ability to quick draw your sword and shield in a surprise bar fight? Do you want to try applying your tactics in an alley way encounter gone wrong? These are just some of the scenarios we like to offer at Shield Knock. 

We will also be offering plenty of time for open mat free sparring. Safety equipment, swords, and a variety of shields will be made available for sparring
