Stronghold Historical Combat offers both HEMA training and Buhurt combat! HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) involves the study and practice of historical European swordsmanship, drawing from authentic medieval and Renaissance fighting manuals. Buhurt, also known as 'armored combat', is a full-contact medieval combat sport where participants engage in one-on-one duels or large team battles, referred to as melees.
Both disciplines incorporate steel weapons, protective equipment, and extensive historical study, paired with modern training techniques. Whether you're interested in historical sword fighting classes or the thrill of armored combat, there's something for everyone.
At Stronghold, sparring is central to how we train and grow both as martial artists and as a community. We believe that controlled, respectful pressure-testing is one of the most effective ways to deepen technical skill, strengthen decision-making, and develop genuine confidence.
We approach sparring as a cooperative challenge, not a contest of egos. Beginners in our sword fighting classes start with structured drills and light, guided exchanges to build safety, control, and good technical habits. As students progress, sparring evolves into a dynamic laboratory where historical techniques, timing, and strategy can be explored in real time.

Our sword fighting classes are grounded in careful interpretation of primary sources. Whether it’s medieval longsword, Renaissance rapier, or later-period weapons, we look first to the surviving manuals for guidance. This ensures that our sword fighting classes are faithful to the historical systems they come from, rather than modern inventions or guesses. We strive for accessible scholarship for all students.
You don’t need to be a historian to engage with source material. We present translations, illustrations, and key concepts in a clear, approachable way so beginners and experienced practitioners alike can understand the “why” behind the movements. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore interpretations, and take part in the ongoing conversation that defines historical martial arts.

Competition is encouraged not solely to create champions but to give students the chance to test themselves, manage adrenaline, and experience the art of HEMA of armored combat training under higher pressure. We value sportsmanship, personal growth, and historical accuracy as much as any medal awarded. Students who choose to compete receive supportive coaching and engage in a positive environment focused on improvement. There are numerous competitive opportunities locally, regionally, and internationally to challenge ourselves, and our coaches are always there to assist everyone looking to compete! HEMA and Buhurt competitions abound and help strengthen our bond as a team!

Above all, we believe that Stronghold thrives on a culture where people lift each other up. Whether someone is preparing for their first Buhurt armored combat class, their first HEMA tournament, or simply working through a tricky technique during training, the community stands behind them. We strive to make our school a place where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to keep growing.
Community doesn’t stop at the training floor. We host workshops, social events, study sessions, and friendly meet-ups that help students build friendships as well as skills. Shared effort, shared learning, and shared experiences turn classmates into a genuine community.

Yes! Your membership is all inclusive and allows you to participate in all the classes we offer. However, please note that the full contact armored activities are restricted to people who are 18 or older (we have alternative options called 'soft kit' for folks under 18).
Our classes are open to anyone 15 or older, however, our full contact armored activities require participants to be 18 or older. Private lessons and private group parties can accommodate participants as young as 8 years old with advanced planning.
Please also note that anyone under 18 will require a legal guardian to be present for their first class at the studio and their legal guardian must sign a liability waiver on their behalf. Legal guardians are strictly those who have been appointed legal authority to make decisions on behalf of the minor.
Children under 15 may not participate in classes, however, we are a family friendly facility. Our membership includes parents and caregivers with children. We do not provide child minding services, but children are welcome in our studio. We ask that children are kept off the mat during class time and are reasonably nondisruptive (loud is okay, but being a risk to themselves or others is not).
Our lounge space is kid friendly with some toys, we allow snacks and drinks in the lounge, and our restroom has a change table.
Yes, very! We'd be limiting ourselves to an extremely niche group if we required members to have prior sword fighting experience. Having sports or martial arts experience can be helpful, but it's certainly not required. We welcome everyone regardless of experience, fitness level, ability, or body type. Sword fighting should be enjoyed by everyone.
We do, and we require members to abide by it. You can read it here. We also have a Safe Practice & Sparring Protocol.
We suggest you wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement and exercise. A water bottle is also strongly recommended. We don't allow outside shoes on our training floor for sanitary reasons, but you're welcome to wear any dedicated indoor gym or sports shoes.
We require all members to pass a Rank 1 test or complete one of our beginner's courses before they are allowed to spar with our regular membership. This is partly for insurance purposes and partly to keep everyone safe. Members who have not passed the rank requirement will not be permitted to do full contact sparring. This ensures that all of our members have a strong understanding of our safety protocols, code of conduct, and sparring expectations so that everyone can have fun and be safe. There is no exception to this rule. On average, most folks can get this done after a few weeks with us, but it is but everyone goes at their own pace.
Not at all! We encourage sparring as part of our holistic approach to martial arts, but we will never force you to do anything you are uncomfortable with. We hope that we can get you feeling ready to try sparring, but ultimately you are the one to make that decision.
With the exception of athletic cups, we provide everything you need. Athletic cups are strongly encouraged as anatomically necessary and are required for sparring. Besides an athletic cup, you don't need anything else. Once you decide that this is a hobby you want to spend time doing, we can help recommend the best and safest gear for you. But you won't need to buy anything else until you're ready to do so. If you want to buy equipment, please talk to one of our instructors first to confirm it is safe and appropriate for our activities.
Like any sport, physical activity, or martial art there is always a risk of injury. However, we use safety equipment, blunted and flexible weapons, and adhere to a strict Code of Conduct to minimize the possibility of injury. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we will never make you do anything you're uncomfortable with.
We follow state mandates and guidelines, which means things can change at any moment. Currently, we do not require medical masks or proof of vaccination status to obtain membership. People who are unvaccinated or are vulnerable to illness are welcome to wear medical masks as needed without judgement. We expect everyone to do what is best for their own health and safety.
Stronghold Historical Combat is committed to inclusivity and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status in any of our activities or operations.
